Overview

Job Summary

The Director of Nursing for Patient Logistics is responsible for strategic oversight and operational performance. The Director will provide leadership, guidance, and direction in achieving outcomes consistent with the mission, vision, goals and behaviors of Atrium Health.

The Director of Nursing for Patient Logistics will work in collaboration with the Transfer Center Medical Directors and other senior leaders to facilitate and advance strategic initiatives to develop and standardize an Enterprise Patient Logistics model including but not limited to Admission, Transfer and Discharge within Atrium Health and other hospital/health systems. This Director is responsible for the for advanced care coordination and oversight for the clinical acumen of the Patient Logistics department through oversight of patient safety, quality and efficiency outcomes as well as teammate and patient satisfaction.

This position works in partnership with the Program Manager of Patient Logistics.

 

Essential Functions

  • Oversees flow processes for The Transfer Center/ Patient Logistics Department.
  • Ensures facility transfer and consults occur in a timely manner.
  • Uses problem solving to collaborate with departments whose flow metrics do not meet established goals.
  • Collaborates with appropriate leaders to forecast bed needs and avoid crises.
  • Resolves conflicts through communication and negotiation with physicians and nursing staff when disputes over bed access may arise.
  • Guides training for use of transfer center IT applications.
  • Works with IAS and Clinical Informatics to problem solve any maintenance and troubleshooting issues with the transfer center technology.
  • Monitors, assists in improving compliance with all intake, acceptance and patient placement.
  • Implements strategic operational plan for the region’s Transfer Center by collaborating with Physicians, Nurses, Executives, EVS, Mobile Medicine/ Transport Services, and other departments.
  • Identifies and analyzes key metrics to evaluate flow processes and effectiveness.
  • Ensures operational processes are effective and transformational including capacity management, resource allocation and issue resolution.
  • Assists clinical and administrative leaders with development and implementation of large-scale initiatives needed to continually improve patient flow and operational efficiencies. Examples may include altering protocols, customer service delivery methods, clinical flow efficiencies, system and technology enhancements, and operational improvements.
  • Manages enterprise bed allocation criteria, forecasting, and tracking.
  • Directs maintenance of a Key Performance Indicator dashboard to ensure transparency in quality and safety data.
  • Provides a sound foundation for operational support for internal and external customers.
  • Ensures legal compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies.

 

Education, Experience and Certifications

Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. Current RN license or temporary license as a Registered Nurse Petitioner in the state in which you work and reside or; if declaring a National License Compact (NLC) state as your primary state of residency, meet the licensure requirements in your home state; or for Non-National License Compact states, current RN license or temporary license as a Registered Nurse Petitioner required in the state where the RN works. MSN required. If undergraduate degree is BSN a master’s degree from a health-related program or MBA is acceptable. Must have MSN if undergraduate degree is not BSN. Appropriate professional leadership certification required within 1 year of eligibility for professional certification exam. Previous leadership experience preferred. Experience working in a Virtual Care setting, Call Center or Transfer Center preferred. Emergency Management experience preferred. Additional education, training, certification, or experience may be required within the department by the nurse leader.

  • Requires critical thinking, concentration, responsiveness under stress, walking, standing, working in an office environment, speaking English, hearing, seeing, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Performs all job functions under normal office conditions; includes sitting, using a telephone with a headset for long periods of time, walking and standing.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively on the computer and via telephone.
  • Ability to monitor multiple computer screens.
