JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for supporting day to day continuous patient safety operations for the region. Collaborates with key stakeholders and Quality teammates to optimize the safety culture across the system. 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required; RN licensure required.  Master’s degree preferred. Four (4) to six (6) years’ experience in healthcare or directly related field preferred. Previous experience or knowledge in high reliability organizing principles, safety science and human factors strongly preferred. Knowledge in safety management systems preferred. Direct project experience with PDSA required; knowledge of Lean Concepts and Six Sigma preferred. Previous experience or knowledge of The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals. Two (2) to four (4) years leadership/management experience preferred.

 

 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Active Registered Nurse licensure from the State of North Carolina required.   Certification in health care quality, patient safety or related regulatory entity preferred, required within 2 years of employment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Proficiently facilitates patient safety efforts and coaches’ others in the development of patient safety improvement capabilities with emphasis on process redesign and measurement; provides direction to the department and business unit leadership in the planning of a systematic, organization-wide approach to continuous patient safety improvement.
  2. Develops and maintains a close working relationship with senior Quality leadership as well as business unit leadership, executives, and medical staff to optimize safety culture; Exhibits the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the organization to achieve quality and patient safety goals.
  3. Exhibits critical thinking skills to develop innovative and sustainable improvement solutions for their assigned business unit/specialty area. Demonstrates strong planning, execution and follow up skills.
  4. Assists with the coordination of the annual analysis and implementation of the Patient Safety Plan. Prepares Safety reports, scorecards, and presentations as appropriate.
  5. Works collaboratively with resources to facilitate improvement teams to achieve System quality and patient safety goals.
  6. Demonstrates ability to effectively convey information related to complex clinical or business processes.
  7. Coordinates department and business unit Patient Safety meetings, analyzes trends of performance metrics, identifies opportunities for improvement, develops and maintains action plans, measures success of these action plans and creates the records and follow-up metrics for each meeting and activity; reassesses approach to maximize success.
  8. Assists leadership in defining key performance indicators and developing measurement tools to evaluate quality improvements, coordinates patient safety culture assessment efforts.
  9. Develops strategies for improvement that include considerations for leading practice research and shares implementation results across the system.  Provides education and training on patient safety and high reliability principles to Atrium Health leaders, teammates, and physicians.
  10. Participates in and/or coordinates multi facility/business unit and/or system wide projects, initiatives, and collaboratives.
  11. Demonstrates mastery of facilitation skills (both team and individual), data analysis and statistical process control to effect improvement in identified goals and clinical outcomes at the business unit and system level.
  12. Coordinates / facilitates the FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) process and other patient safety tools such as patient safety risk assessments when appropriate.
  13. Supports harm reduction & prevention efforts by leading cause analysis program for assigned facility / business units. 
  14. Consults with and trains staff to implement monitoring and measurement tools, and data analysis techniques.
  15. Provides project management and overall facilitation for prioritizing and advocating patient safety initiatives at the facility(s), business unit(s) and/or System level. Provides ongoing updates to project sponsors and stakeholders.
     
  16. Assists Administration with special projects as appropriate.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Intermediate to advanced computer skills with demonstration of skill and competence in use of all Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Knowledge of Lean Concepts preferred.

Advanced Business Communication skills preferred.

Previous experience or knowledge of TJC preferred.
