Job Summary

Reviews/abstracts/analyzes codes from inpatient/outpatient physician office records within acute care facilities. Fully comprehends all aspects of an American College of Surgeons (ACOS) approved hospital program.



Essential Functions

  • Reviews and/or abstracts and collects follow-up data from CPN practices.
  • Codes data using ICD-O-3, AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, SEER Summary Staging manual, and FORDS.
  • Completes follow-up for all living patients and performs case finding duties.
  • Coordinates Oncology Quality Assurance activities. Ensures all activities meet ACOS guidelines.
  • Ensures Quality control of data standards are met.
  • Understands and helps maintain ten standard books from ACOS used for survey/program approval.
  • Understands mechanics of running statistical reports and graphs for physicians.
  • Provides back-up for Cancer Conferences and is knowledgeable in AHEC procedures.

Physical Requirements

Fast-paced office environment and various interruptions. Must be able to concentrate in such an environment. Involves standing, sitting, lifting, bending, walking and pushing/pulling cart of 60lbs.



Education, Experience and Certifications

CTR or RHIT preferred. Must have Associate Degree in a healthcare field or graduate of Cancer Registry specific degree program. CTR Certification must be obtained within three years from hire date. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Excellent verbal and communication skills needed. Basic report-running skills.
