Sponsored Programs Administration

The Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) team supports the research community at Atrium Health through a connected partnership. Sponsored Programs Administration is responsible for all sponsored activities across the organization for the full continuum of the award. This includes identifying funding, proposals, pre-award, contracting, post award, and reporting.

The awards that are administered by Sponsored Programs team has grown in number and complexity over the past few years as Atrium Health continues to strengthen its excellence in Research.

The Sponsored Programs Administration team is part of the larger Finance Division at Atrium Health and has a strong partnership with the Medical Group, Research and Education, and various other divisions in the organization that are connected to support the research mission of Atrium Health.

Main areas of support:

  • All areas have responsibility in participating in various audits from sponsors such as federal/state, internal compliance and annual single audits.
  • Post-Award Finance – Financial project management including effort reporting, review of award expenditures, subrecipient monitoring, invoicing, payment analysis and preparation of financial reports.
  • Clinical Trials and Patient Billing – Budget development and negotiation for industry-sponsored clinical trials which includes the coverage analysis to support medical billing for patients enrolled in research projects.
  • Grants & Contracts – Pre- and post-award non-financial administration of sponsored programs including finding funding, proposal submissions, contracting for all sponsored programs-related funded and unfunded agreements (other than industry-sponsored clinical trials), award acceptance, post-award non-financial administration and compliance as well as systems support.


Key Responsibilities:

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">This Vice President will be responsible for leading the Sponsored Programs Administration team.  This includes Pre-Award, Contracting, and Post Award for all grants, industry sponsored clinical trials and other sponsored projects. This dynamic leader will have the opportunity to develop partnerships with all stakeholders including Office of General Counsel, IAS/Data Governance, Corporate Compliance, Research Leadership, and Principal Investigators.  The Sponsored Programs expert must leverage their expertise to support Atrium Health in advancing its clinical research and funding opportunities.


  1. Partner with Clinical Leaders, funded laboratory researchers, and other stakeholders to develop a process for evaluating research projects based on system priorities, alignment to program growth, and funding principles and goals.
  2. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Develop executive presentations to provide all stakeholders with performance metrics of Sponsored Programs, transparency of all activity, and elevate SPA within the organization.
  3. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead all initiatives related to pre-award including proposal development, acceptance of awards, and post award prior approval actions.
  4. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Own all contracting functions related to sponsored programs and industry clinical trials.  This includes collaboration agreements, sub-agreements, non-disclosure agreements, consulting agreements, material transfer agreements, and data use agreements.
  5. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead all post award administration activities including all required progress reporting.
  6. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Guide the Finance team that supports all post award finance activities and other research finance functions.  This includes budgets, effort reporting, invoices and payment processing, sponsor reporting, sub-recipient monitoring, F&A rate agreements, financial reporting, and compliance activities.
  7. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Utilize strong financial acumen and analytics to guide decision making for all facets of administrating sponsored programs.
  8. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Continuous review of processes and information systems for best practices.
  9. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Collaborate with equivalent mechanisms within the Levine Cancer Institute, the largest funding recipient in Atrium Health.


Education Requirements:

  • Certified Research Administrator required.
  • Master’s Degree Preferred in Health Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration or comparable program.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.


Work Experience:

  • Experience leading in a matrix environment in a position with strategic decision making for the organization.
  • Experience in the full continuum of Sponsored Programs, pre-award, contracting and post award finance.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience leading a sponsored programs division for a large healthcare system, with specific expertise in peer-reviewed government agency funding.

Critical Success Factors in First 6-24 Months:

  • Show measurable increases in funding.
  • Leveraging clinical trial grant/funding expertise, develop creditability among clinical research service line leadership.
  • Using the appropriate resources, establish a best-in-class operations function for the SPA team to execute efficiently. Minimize delays in reporting.
